33-year-old suffers life-threatening injuries after being hit by bus

UPDATE, June 14, 2019: Burnaby RCMPhave released the 62-year-old man who was arrested. No charges have been laid.

A 33-year-old man who was hit by a bus in Burnaby, B.C., on Tuesday has life-threatening injuries, RCMP say.

Officers said the man had been arguing with another man before, somehow, he "entered the roadway" on Hastings Street nearCarleton Avenue during rush hour. The bus hit him in the lane closest to the sidewalk around 5:45 p.m. PT.

Two men were arrested at the scene. One of them, a 62-year-old man, remainsin custody. No charges have been laid.

"How the male entered the roadway is still under investigation, with a focus on whether it was a result of the altercation," RCMPsaid in a statement released Wednesday.

Officers are still trying to figure out whether the men knew each other.

The bus driver is not under investigation.

Mounties blocked off two eastbound lanes ofHastings Street for hours as part of the investigation. RCMP remained on scene Wednesday, with a large blue tarp covering the hood of the TransLink bus.

Members of the serious crime unit have also been assigned to the case.
