Death of Cameron Leon, high-risk sex offender, now considered a homicide

The death of Cameron Leon, a high-risk sex offender whose body was found last week in a North Vancouver creek, is now being investigated as a suspected homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation of the 22-year-old's death, said Sgt. Stephanie Ashton Wednesday.

On Dec. 1, Vancouver police released Leon's photo and description, announcing he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant after failing to return to his halfway house in Vancouver.

Three days later, his body was found in Mosquito Creek near Fell Ave. and 17th street in North Vancouver.

"At this point, we have nothing to indicate that [the warrant] has anything to do with the circumstances that led up to his death," said Ashton.

"Our priority now is to try to find anyone that had contact with him between Dec. 1 and the time of him being found on Dec. 4."

Leon has been described by police as fivefeet11inches, 195 poundswith black hair, brown eyes, prescription eyeglassesand a tattoo of "Leon" on his right hand and a cross and wings on his upper back.

He had been on statutory release after serving a two-year federal sentence for assault causing bodily harm, and sexual assault causing bodily harm.
