The next time you reach for a cigarette, the Canadian Cancer Society wants you to lace up your running shoes instead.

The society's new program, Run to Quit, aids smokers who want to quit by helping them take up an activity that is healthy and rewarding.

"We know that one of the best ways to quit smoking is to transfer the habit from one addiction to another," said Julia Hayos, special projects lead with the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C./Yukon. "Picking up running is a great way to manage cravings, manage withdrawal symptoms and give yourself something else to work towards."

The society has partnered with the Edmonton-based Running Room chain of stores to offer a 10-week in-person coaching and training program. An online course is also available.

No experience necessary

Hayos was herself a smoker until taking up running.

She said in a pilot for the program before its nationwide rollout, the Cancer Society found participants were seven times more likely to quit than those not enrolled.

"Having social support [and] having experts coach you along the way was a helpful tool," she said.

Hayos said despite general public awareness of the health risks associated with smoking, it can still be an extremely hard addiction to overcome. She emphasised no running experience is necessary to sign up for the program all you need is the desire to quit.

"Taking that first step in this program is meant to be a welcoming environment where you can come in and if all you do is walk, then that's a great starting point."

"Taking up a program like this where you do get that expert support is one way to help you take that next step and make a sustainable quit."

The in-person program costs just under $70. The online program, which includes virtual training, is just under $50. There is also as separate online program available for free.
