Bus stop car crash driver in Surrey, B.C. caught after fleeing on foot, say police

The driver of a white Corvette that crashed into a bus stop in Surrey, B.C. tried to flee on foot but has been arrested, say police.

The driver of a white Corvette that crashed into a bus stop in Surrey, B.C. tried to flee on footbut has been arrested, say police.

"For some unknown reason at this point helost control right before the bus shelter," said Staff Sgt. Blair McColl.

McColl said a witness followed the driver as he ran away from the scene of the accidentleaving an injured passenger in the carand saw him get into a taxi.

Police then located and stopped the taxi,about a kilometre away.

McColl said the witness was "instrumental" in helping them findthe driver.

A man who was sitting in the bus shelter at the time of the crash was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

The car passenger was also transported to hospital, with minor injuries.

Police said they're still investigating the cause of the accident, but believealcohol may have been a factor.

The crash happened near the intersection of 96 Avenue and King George Boulevard shortly after 6 p.m. PT. Northbound traffic onKing George Boulevard in the area has been closed to traffic and will be until at least 10 p.m. PT.

The incident comes just a day after Surrey residentEvan Archibald was killed at a bus stop nearFraser Highway and156 Street.

"I think all you can do if you're the person standing in the bus shelter is just be aware of your surroundings," said McColl. "But you shouldn't have to be."
