Robertson de Chazal cleared of allegations in attacks

A man charged in connection with what police at the time termed hate crimes has been cleared of all allegations against him.

Robertson de Chazal was found not guilty of assault in one case, discharged at the preliminary inquiry in another and had a stay of proceedings in relation to another case of aggravated assault.

The court proceedings played out in the years following a high-profile news conference by police, in which three men were named.

In one case, de Chazalpleaded not guilty toaggravated assault for allegedly setting a sleeping Filipino man on fire in October 2009.

But the Crown concluded a stay of proceedings was necessaryon the first day of thetrial in B.C. Supreme Court inAugust 2015.

According to the Crown, the otheraccused charged in that case, Alastair Miller, was acquitted.

In another case, de Chazalwas found not guilty of assault in B.C. Supreme Court on August 14, 2015.

And a thirdcharge of aggravated assault wasdismissed in Duncan provincial court after de Chazal was discharged at a preliminary hearing in September 2015.
