City of Surrey cracks down on illegal fireworks

The City of Surrey is cracking down on illegal fireworks and firecrackers prior to Halloween weekend.

City seizes a record number of illegal fireworks over 2-day period

It has been illegal to sell or discharge fireworks in the city of Surrey since 2005. (CBC)

The City of Surrey has seized arecord number ofillegal fireworks and firecrackersin a 48 hour period this week.

A statement from the municipality says bylaw enforcement officers haveseized $100,000 worth of illegal fireworks so far this Halloween season, and they will continue to crack down on vendors over the weekend and next week.

The operation targeted businesses, mobile vendors and those selling the items out of their private residences.

It has been illegal to sell or discharge fireworks in the City of Surrey since 2005.

Penalties for selling or discharging fireworks can range from $1,000 in finesto the loss of a business license.

Anumber of cities and districtsin the region, including Vancouver,allow those with proper permits to sell and dischargefireworks during the Halloween period.
