Inaugural International Indigenous Basketball Tournament Comes to B.C.

CBC Vancouver is a proud sponsor of the HaiCo World Indigenous Basketball Challenge, the inaugural international Indigenous basketball tournament. This years tournament will be hosted by the Skidegate Saints of Haida Gwaii at Simon Fraser University from August 10-13.

CBC Vancouver is a proud sponsor of the HaiCo World Indigenous Basketball Challenge, the inaugural international Indigenous basketball tournament. This year's tournament will be hosted by the Skidegate Saints of Haida Gwaii at Simon Fraser University from August 10-13.

This tournament features the topAboriginalteams from North America as well asIndigenousand island nation teams from around theworldincluding the national teams of Bermuda, Tonga, Zambia, South Sudan and the Maori National Team of New Zealand.

In addition to greatbasketballaction, all teams will be sharing aspects of their culture. The opening and closing ceremonies will feature drumming, singing and dancing. The Maori team will also be performing the Haka before their games.

The 16-team tournament will follow the same model as the BC High School Championships with each team playing 4 games. The tournament, certified by Basketball BC and Basketball, aims to continue biannually in different locations around the world each time.

Day passes are $5 at the door and weekend passes are $15.
