Dal Richards to get street named after him in Vancouver

Vancouver city council has passed a motion on Wednesdayto namea street or another city asset after the late music legend Dal Richards.

"I was a fan of Dal Richards and he was also a dear family friend.I have very special memories of Dal as a person, and also as a musician, including his performance at my wedding," saidCoun.Melissa DeGenova,who put the motionforward.

"He was a special person and his legacy will live on for future generations through his music."

The long-time Vancouver band leaderdied New Year's Eve at age 97.

City staff will report back to council on options for a place that could be named after him.

"I'm looking forward to hearing back from staff on the options they will identify, and working with the family and stakeholders to find a street or place where Vancouver will be reminded of Dal's contributions to our city," said De Genova.

The motion was seconded by Vision Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal and passed unanimously.

Over the years, Richards washonoured many times. His awards includethe Order of Canada, the Order of B.C. and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also an inductee of the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame.
