The chief of the Delta, B.C., police says acting Sgt. John Jasminstook "ultimate action" when he intervened off-duty in an altercation between two people and was stabbed multiple times.

"He doesn't even remember even feeling the stab wound," Chief Neil Dubord told The Early Edition host Stephen Quinn.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jasmins and a 41-year-old woman were stabbed outside Immaculate Conception Elementary School following a physical altercation between the woman and another man.

Dubord says Jasmins was sitting in his car, waiting to pick up his children who attend the school, when he sawthe couple arguing. The fight became physical, which prompted Jasmins to act.

"He ended up running towards them and ended up kind of doing a football tackle of the man to be able to break up this fight," said Dubord.

"He's trying to hold this person on the ground, but then he starts to see the blood coming and realizes he's been stabbed."

Jasmins was able to keep the assailant down on the grounduntil Delta officers responded, approximately three or four minutes after 3 p.m., Dubord said.

Police say asuspect in the investigation, 49-year-old Manoj George of Delta, was apprehended at the scene and has since been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Jasmins and the woman were each stabbed several times and taken to hospital in serious condition.

The officer's condition has since been upgraded to stable, while the woman is listed as serious but improving.

'On duty 24/7'

Dubord saidJasmins, who's been with the Delta department for over 13 years, is known as a proactive investigator and served on the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit in Metro Vancouver.

Sworn police officers are "on duty 24/7," but taking action for off-duty cops can mean calling 911 or containing a scene to preserve evidence, Dubord said.

"In John's case, he went to the ultimate action and jumped in and actually suffered serious wounds as a result."
