Family of 3, including infant, dead after crash in B.C.: RCMP

A family of three died in a head-on collision nearAgassiz, B.C., early Tuesday, according to the RCMP. Two adults in the car died at the scene; an infant in the car was airlifted to hospitalbut died a few hours later, police said.

A family of three died in a head-on collision nearAgassiz, B.C., early Tuesday, RCMP said.

Police were called to thecrash scene on the Lougheed Highwaynear Seabird Islandjust before 3:30 a.m. PT, Agassiz RCMP Sgt. Andy Lot said in a news release.

There, they found a car and tractor trailer had collided head on.

Two adults in the car died at the scene,Lot said. An infant in the car was airlifted to hospitalbut died a few hours later, he added.

B.C. Emergency Health Servicestold CBC News that six ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the scene, which is about 100 kilometres east of Vancouver.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, according to the news release.

Police saidthey're working with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service to find out how the collision happened, and do not believe at this time that either driverhad used alcohol or drugs.

B.C. Coroners Service spokespersonAmber Schinkel confirmed in an email that the service is investigating the three deaths

Mental health supports have been available for everyone involved inthe response, Lot said.

"I would like to thank my officers and all the first responders who attended to this tragic incident for their hard work and dedication to serving the victims and their families," Lot said.

"We are working on supporting all those who were affected from this crash and loss of an entire family."

Lougheed Highway was closed at the scene until 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
