Fees cut, exemptions extended for AirCare

Faced with a surplus for the Lower Mainland's AirCare program, the TransLink board has decided to reduce inspection fees.

Faced with a surplus for the Lower Mainland's AirCare program, the TransLink board has decided to reduce inspection fees.

The cost for 1991 and older vehicles will be $23 for annual emissions testing, rather than the current $24.

The fee for inspecting 1992 and newer vehicles will drop from $48 dollars to $47 tested every two years.

Owners of new vehicles are also going to get a break on AirCare testing.

The TransLink directors have voted to extend the exemption of new vehicles from two years to three years.

The budget surplus is the result of an increase in the number of cars and light trucks being tested.

Last year, 778,000 vehicles were tested. Eighty-four per cent passed inspection.
