Fire destroys Abbotsford poultry barn

Fire destroyed a large poultry barn in Abbotsford, B.C., on Thursday morning, but the barn was no longer being used to raise chickens.

Flames broke out a little before 4 a.m. at Harris Road and Bell Road and about 40 firefighters and 10 trucks were eventually called into fight the flames.

Despite the firefighters' efforts a large portion of the large barn had already been destroyed.

As of 7 a.m. the fire was still burning and Abbotsford's assistant fire chief Craig Bird said he expected it would take firefighters several more hours to put it out.

The barn was once used to raise chickens, but was only being used to store machinery and other equipment at the time of the fire.

Bird confirmed that there was an initial report that a marijuana odour could be smelled at the fire, but he said at this time there's no evidence the barn is being used as a grow-op.
