Fonyo fails to make bail

Steve Fonyo, who once ran across Canada to raise funds for cancer research, remained in a Surrey, B.C., jail Tuesday, unable to come up with $20,000 bail.

Steve Fonyo, who once ran across Canada to raise funds for cancer research, remained in a Surrey, B.C., jail Tuesday, unable to come up with $20,000 bail.

Fonyo, 45, was arrested last week at his Surrey residence and charged with using a fraudulent credit card at a gas station in the neighbouring municipality of Delta.

Fonyo, who lost a leg to cancer at age 12, ran across the country in 1984, raising more than $13 million for cancer research.

Since then, he has racked up an extensive criminal record. The federal government withdrew his Order of Canada earlier this year.

Fonyo's fiance, Lisa Greenwood, was distraught after his court appearance Tuesday.

Greenwood was recently released from jail on theft and assault charges and said she does not know how they'll come up with Fonyo's bail money.

Their wedding, which wasplanned for Aug. 28, is now in jeopardy, she said.

The one-time national hero has battled personal demons, including cocaine addiction and depression. In 1996, Fonyo pleaded guilty in Edmonton to more than a dozen charges, ranging from assault with a weapon to fraud and theft.

By 2008, he had at least seven driving convictions, including impaired driving, for which he served time in jail.
