Former Radio India executive convicted in Surrey temple shooting

Former Radio India managing director Maninder Gill has been convictedofa 2010 shooting in the parking lot of a Surrey Sikh temple.

B.C. Supreme Court justice Kenneth Ball found Gill guilty on five of six charges, includingaggravated assault anddischarging a firearm with intent to wound or disfigureSurrey builderHarjit Atwal.

He was acquittedof shooting at another man.

The incident happened outside awedding at the Guru Nanaktemple near 72ndAvenue and Scott Road in August 2010. Gill was a well-known broadcaster in Metro Vancouver's South Asian community.

An employee with Radio India says he has no involvement with the current station of the same name, which operates online.

Police were called to the temple after reports of gunshots.

The pair were known to each other before the shooting. Gill claimed to have acted in self defence, an argument rejected by the judge.

In 2013,Gillreceived a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal from the federal NDP.

Canadian MPs and senators are each given 30 of the medals, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Queen's ascension to the throne, to distribute as they wish.

Gill said he deservedthe recognition for raising $10 million for charity through his radio station.

His sentencing is set for May 10.
