Governor General celebrates MOSAIC's 40th anniversary

Governor General David Johnston and his wife Sharon met with immigrants and refugees during MOSAIC B.C.'s 40th anniversary celebration in Vancouver.

"We're here to learn and celebrate this remarkable organization," said Johnston.

"What's interesting about your service is that it's practical and timely."

With 27 locations, the non-profit organization is the primary settlement and employment services agency in Metro Vancouver.

Part of the Governor General's visitincluded a round table discussion with stakeholders and community leaders.

After the meeting, Johnston met with immigrants and refugees like Mohamad Ali aSyrian refugee who arrived in Canada last year.

"What Canadagave us is a lot really no other country gave the Syrians [as much]as Canada gave," said the former Syrian doctor.

As Ali works to get his credentials recognized in Canada, the Governor General said he'd like to see that process improved.

"I think what we need to do is see those stories here and spread them across the country, so all of us can be influenced by them and do an even better job of welcoming of refugees, particularly focused on the recognition of foreign credentialswhere if we look at a comparative basis, we don't do as well as other countries."
