Mudslide closes Highway 1 between Lytton and Spences Bridge

A mudslide shut down the Trans Canada Highway late Wednesday in both directions between Lytton located about 150 kilometres northeast of Vancouver and Spences Bridge.

DriveBC says there is no detour available and a slope assessment will be conducted at first light

A section of Highway 1 north of B.C.'s Fraser Canyon remains closed Thursday,more than 12 hours after a mudslide hit the road.

The slide shut down the Trans Canada Highway late Wednesday in both directions between Lytton located about 150 kilometres northeast of Vancouver and Spences Bridge, between the junctions with Highway 8 and Highway 12.

There is no detour available and an assessment is still in progress, DriveBC said. The next update is not expected until 4 p.m. PT.

Witnesses saidit was pouring rain before the mudslide.

DriveBC initially reported flooding in the area of Ashcroft, Spences Bridge and Lytton around 8:30 p.m. The highway was closed around 9:30 p.m. PT.

Environment Canada radar showed moderate to heavy rain moving over the slide area between 7:10 p.m. and 7:50 p.m.
