A hiker has been killed by a falling tree on Vancouver Island.

RCMP in Campbell River say the accident happened Tuesday afternoon as the 57-year-old woman was on the Ripple Rock Trail, 17 kilometres north of the city.

A news release from the detachment says the Williams Lake, B.C., resident was hiking with her daughter when the tree came down across the popular trail.

First aid was immediately provided by the victim's daughter, who is a nurse, and an ex-military medic who was hiking nearby.

However, the impact of the tree "left no hope for survival,"police said.

The B.C. Coroners Service has taken over the investigation.
