The teenaged victim in a fatal shooting in Abbotsford on Friday has been named as a young man connected to gang activity.

Jaspreet Sidhu, 18, died in hospital Friday afternoon after he was shot in the 32000 block of Oriole Crescent. Investigators believe the shooting was targetedand say Sidhu was known to police.

"This was a brazen shooting that occurred in a residential neighbourhood, and it was a blatant disregard for the safety of the public." Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said in a press release.

"It has been said many times before, but if you are involved in criminal activity then you are not immune to the dangers that come with it.

"This is another example of a young life that has been lost too soon, and a family has been left devastated."

'Don't feel safe'

Justin Baerg lives in the neighbourhood where the shooting took place.

"I don't feel safe in my own home," he said on Sunday adding that he's not surprised by violence because there have been other incidents.

He says he'd like to move, but can't afford to rent anywhere else in Metro Vancouver.

Investigators say there's no evidence to link the death to a second shooting in Abbotsford that injured another young man during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Homicide detectives are now trying to identify a suspect who was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting that killed Sidhu.

The man was spotted heading south down a pathway on Oriole Crescent and is described as 5 feet 11 incheswith a medium build, wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up and sunglasses.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
