Ice-jam costs mount as Nechako River subsides

The price tag to deal with the ice jam on the Nechako River in Prince George has topped $680,000.

The price tag to deal with the ice jam on the Nechako River in Prince George is now more than $680,000.

Water levels have dropped in most areas along the Nechako, but workers continue to fill portable gabion dikes and build bermsin case the waterrises again.

Kevin Brown, a liaison officer forthe City of Prince George, told CBC News all the extra work comes at a price.

"The road building, the materials to fill the gabion dikes, the earth berm over on the other side of the river, all of those costs have been associated with dealing with the flood to date," said Brown.

The ice jamis still about two kilometres long and several homes and businesses remain under an evacuation order and many others are still on evacuation alert.

Last week the ice jam was more than five km longand more than 50 homes and businesses were evacuated.
