Kitsilano Park bike lane approved by Vancouver Park Board

The Vancouver Park Board has approved plans to spend $2.2 million to build a segregated bike lane though Kitsilano Beach and Hadden parks.

Constance Barnes says in this case the aim is to keep pedestrians safe from cyclists in one of the city's most popular parks.

"Kits beach is very, very busy. You've got volleyball, you've got basketball, the first accessible children's playground. You've got bicycles, pedestrians runners, skate-boarders everything and it's one path, so our goal is making sure that it's safe for all of the users," said Barnes.

Hadden Park is located just to the east of Kitsilano Beach Park and is home to the Maritime Museum and a popular off-leash beach for dogs.

Opponents says the project will ruin the parks, which they say are meant more for people on foot.

Construction of the lanes is expected to be completed by the summer of next year.

The new bike lane will be part of the city's Seaside Greenway plan to build a bike lane all around the waterfront from Canada Place in downtown Vancouver to Jericho Beach.
