Langley mushroom farm closed over pollution concerns

A mushroom farm in Langley was shut down over the weekend until it complies with a pollution prevention order issued by the Environment Ministry.

A mushroom farm in Langley, B.C.,was shut down over the weekend until it complies with a pollution prevention order issued by the Environment Ministry.

Environment Minister Barry Penner said the pollution order was issued after inspectors found agricultural and compost waste overflowing during heavy rain, threatening a nearby river.

The Farmers Fresh Mushrooms facility is the same one involved in a Sept. 5 incident in which three men died and several others were severely injured after being overcome by noxious fumes.

When the order was issued over the weekend, an Environment Ministry official indicated it was unrelated to the recent deaths, but Penner later said nothing has been ruled out.
