Little Mountain plans to be unveiled

Plans for the controversial re-development of Canada's oldest social housing complex will be revealed to the public at an open house in East Vancouver on Saturday.

Further plans for the controversial re-development of Canada's oldest social housing complex will be revealed to the public at an open house in East Vancouver on Saturday.

Little Mountain was built in the early 1950s for families of Canadian veterans returning from World War Two. But most of it was demolished in 2008 despite waves of protests from housing advocates.

James Cheng, the architect for the developer Holborn, says options under consideration for the large parcel of land in the centre of East Vancouver include diversified housing in buildings as tall as 19 storiesand a park-like setting.

"Tomorrow is the culmination of a year and a half of public consultation process. We've been meeting with the community and their advisory group and, as a result of all the meeting, we now have a site plan and a bunch of massing options for the public to view and to comment on," he said.

Cheng said he expects a lively debate around the density and the viewing corridors, which are always hot issue in Vancouver. The open house starts Saturday at 11 a.m. PT at the Riley Park Community Centre in East Vancouver. A second one will be held on Tuesday evening.
