Malahat Highway reopened after deadly crash, sewage spill

Heavy congestion still expected at Goldstream Park as the investigation and cleanup continue.

Drivers told to expect significant delays as investigation and cleanup continue

The Malahat Highway was closed in both directions after a deadly crash that led to a sewage spill near Goldstream Provincial Park on Wednesday morning. (MainroadSouthIsland/Twitter)

One person is dead after a crash between a sewage truck and an SUVon the MalahatHighway on Wednesday morning.

The vehicles collided in the southbound lane, near the Goldstream Boathouse, around 8 a.m. PT.

RCMP said the driver of the sewage truck was found dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was injured and taken to hospital.

A statement said investigators are still on scene working to determine what caused the crash.

The collision also led to asewage spill. Provincial officials are assessing the hazards from the spill andHAZMAT crews are working on cleanup efforts.

The highway was closed in both directionsjust north of GoldstreamProvincial Park for several hours as the investigation and cleanup began.

The stretch reopened in both directions around 4 p.m. PT, DriveBC tweeted, adding drivers are told to expect significant delays.
