Skinned marten found dumped in water

RCMP officers suspect marten were trapped and skinned for their much-coveted fur.

Prince Rupert RCMP want to know who has been trapping and skinning marten in theNorth Coast city and then tossing the remains into the harbour.

Police say they received two separate calls Saturday about what appeared to be several dead catsin the water by Rushbrook Floats.

Once the carcasseswere taken to a local animal shelter it was determinedthe remains were marten animals similar to mink and the creatures had likely been trapped for their fur.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-627-0700 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
