Black bear killed in collision with motorcycle in Maple Ridge

The BC Conservation Officer Service was called to the crash around midnight Saturday, which happened on a dimly-lit portion of 248 Street.

A black bear is dead and a motorcycle rider is in hospital, after a collision in Maple Ridge early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Todd Hunter with the BC Conservation Officer Servicewas called to the crash around midnight Saturday, which happened ona dimly-lit portion of 248 Street.

"It must have been a pretty violent collision, especially with a black bear," said Hunter. "It obviously killed the bear on impact."

Cubs will be okay

Hunter says the mother bear may have been with her cubs at the time. He says he spotted two of last year's cubs while loading the carcass into his vehicle.

"They'll be able to fend on themselves," he said. "They're not like this year's cubs that need some assistance."

Hunter says bear sightings are common in this area of Maple Ridge, and hopes residents remember to lock up their garbage tonight.
