Evacuation alert lifted after grass fire contained near Pemberton

The B.C. Wildfire Service said the fire near Mount Currie was about 95 hectares almost a square kilometre in size and out of control at its peak.

An evacuation alert affecting people in 15 homes near Pemberton, B.C., has been liftednow that firefighters have contained agrassfire that was sparked Tuesday.

Late Wednesday, the Lil'wat First Nation said the fire was monitored overnight and brought under control.

The fire was about 95 hectares almost a square kilometre in size and out of control at its peak, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The service said more than a dozen of its firefighters were dispatched to help local fire crews suppress the flames.

"We are seeing a few more fires this time of year than we're used to and [this one] is human caused, we suspect, so we're asking people to continue to be vigilant and be careful," saidDorothy Jakobsen, who speaks for the wildfire service's Coastal Fire Centre.
