North Shore Rescue saves exhausted dog

A 120-pound dog was rescuedfroma popular North Shore trail lateThursday evening.

Fraserthe dogand his owner, whose name has not been released, were on the return route back from Norvan Falls when the poochwas no longer able to walk because of cuts on its paws and exhaustion.

Passing hikers noticed the dog in distress and called for help.

"The moment we heard that it was a dog that was in distress, people volunteered," said Jeff Yarnold with North Shore Rescue.

Sixvolunteerscarriedthe dog three kilometresto a helicopter that was waiting to take the dog back to safety.

Yarnold emphasized that the crew were all volunteers and the helicopter time was donated byTalon Helicopterowner Peter Murray.

"This wasn't taxpayer funded."

He added that the volunteer-led organization rescues dogs because if not their owners might put themselves at risk trying to do so themselves.

Yarnold said he's rescued dogs four other times, and they always are cooperative with rescuers.

"These dogs know they're being rescued and they just give in," said Yarnold. "Once they get to that stage and the dog is exhausted, he just laid down and just wanted you to take himhome."
