Police watchdog investigates fatal shooting in Maple Ridge

The province's police watchdog is investigating a fatal shooting in Maple Ridge, B.C.

The victim's family has identified him as Kyaw Naing Maung, 54, who also went by Kyaw Naing Din.

Police and first responders say they were called to a home at Colemore Street and 124 Avenue Sunday afternoon just after 1 p.m. PT.

RCMP said in a news release thatofficers entered the residence and found three individuals. Police say one of those people had a knife.

Officers tried to Taser one person, but were unsuccessful. RCMP saidanother officer fired their gun.

Paramedics were there and tried to treat the victim. He was pronounced dead at the home and police say no one else was injured.

Maung's brother, Thant Din, told CBC News that his brother was mentally illand the family hadcalled police in the past to help them get him to hospital for treatment.

His sister, Yin Yin Din, said the family is distraught over the death and they do not understand how their brother ended up dying on Sunday.

"My brother, you know ...is dead," she said. "This morning he was doing house work, doing laundry for me and sweeping the house and taking care of the litter. Can you imagine?"

The family told CBC News on Sunday that they had warned police that Maung had a glass bottle and that another sister was on her way to the house who could help calmhim down.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. confirmed later Sunday that it is looking into the incident.

The B.C. Coroners Service said it is alsoinvestigating.
