The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is investigatingafter a man was apparently shot by police in Burnaby, B.C. just before 2 a.m. PT Wednesday.

The RCMP was responding to a call about a man with a knife, who was refusing to leave the home on the 500 block of Clare Avenue, said RCMP Acting Inspector Keith Bramhill.

"They were confronted by a male who was non-compliant with police directions," said Bramhill.

Neighbours, who did not want their names used, said they heard several shots and heard yelling in a language they believed to be Russian.

RCMP confirmed the man was shot, and then transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police tape cordoned off the entire block on Wednesday morning. Several items, including a chair and a pillow, were strewn across the road.

Bramhill said it was an isolated incident and the public should not be concerned.

Investigators later confirmed they did recover a knife at the scene.
