Snowmobiler killed in avalanche northeast of Prince George

A snowmobiler was killed by an avalanche Saturday morning in a mountainous area east of Prince George, according to a search and rescue official.

Others in group of 5 unharmed

Rescuers say a snowmobiler was killed in a recreation area about 100 kilometres northeast of Prince George.

Rescuers were called to theregion, known asTorpy,andrecovered the body of an adult male, RCMP said in a statement.

The manwas travelling with a group offour othersnowmobilers who were unharmed.

Mounties say they first received a report of the incident shortly before 11 a.m.

"Someonewas lost, and other than that can't speak much more to incident," said Dale Bull, search manager for Prince George Search and Rescue.

"We just know that one person became involved in the avalanche and that person was the fatality."

The search manager also said rescuers could not fly to the snowmobilers due to fog.

Thearea of the accident, between the Fraser and McGregorrivers, is a prime snowmobilearea, he said.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating while police say the group was experienced and properly equipped.
