City of Richmond applies to put down Rottweiler-cross after dog attack

The city of Richmond has gone to court for permission to euthanize Yogi, a Rottweiler-husky cross that attacked twin sisters in a Richmond park last month.

The city of Richmond has gone to court for permission to euthanizeYogi, aRottweiler-huskycross that attacked twin sisters in a Richmond park last month.

The women were defending a toddler.

KatiMatherwas leftin critical conditionwith more than 100 bites across her body, anda Good Samaritan was also injured.

"This afternoon, the city filed an application in provincial court for an order to have the animal destroyed," said TedTownsend, aspokespersonfor the City of Richmond.

"Our application is based on the severity of the attack and the threat to public safety."

Townsend said the injunction allows the city to retain custody of the dog, which has been keptin isolation at the Richmond animal sheltersince the attack.

Yogi's owner, LucasMacNeil,has defended the dog and says it shouldn't be destroyed.

He has been postingphotos and videos of Yogion social media as part ofa social media campaign that portrays himas a sweet, lovable dog.

MacNeilis also the boyfriend of Mather'stwin sister, Jessi. The two women were playing in the park with Jessi's three-year-old son when the dog attacked, according to the young boy's father.

Officers found KatiMatheron the ground, covered in blood and trying to fend off the 35-kilogramdog.
