Second beating suspect turns himself in

Coquitlam RCMP say they have spoken to the second suspect in the brutal beating of a Coast Mountain bus driver in Coquitlam on the weekend.

Officers interviewed the 19-year-old male and released him without charge after he turned himself in Monday afternoon.

A 20-year-old man Anthony Michael Millwater appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Monday in connection with the attack.

He remains in custody until his next court appearance on a mischief charge. The Crown is also considering more serious charges in the case, once the driver recovers enough to tell his story.

Millwater also faces charges of assault and assault with a weapon from a previous incident last October.

The 57-year-old transit driver was beaten unconscious early Saturday morning after he challenged a youth who was 50 cents short for a ticket. He is still recovering in hospital.

The Canadian Auto Workers union, which represents the drivers, has called for changes to the fare collection system, to reduce the risk to drivers. It has suggested that buses follow the example of SkyTrain which operates on an honour system.

The CAW also wants better security on the buses.
