Slim, white teenager sought in Grouse Mountain stabbing

RCMP in North Vancouver say they are looking for a slim, white teenager with short dark hair who stabbed a man in an unprovoked attack on a Grouse Mountain trail yesterday afternoon.

Police say the 59-year-old victim was coming down the B.C. Mountaineering Club trail around 4 p.m. PT Tuesday when he stepped aside to allow a younger man to pass.

The younger man then stabbed him in the abdomen for no apparent reason. The suspect fled the area, leaving the victim to struggle down the mountain.

At some point, the victim was met by other hikers, who alerted emergency response officials. He was stabilized at the scene and taken to Lions Gate Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

On Wednesday morning police said the victim's vital organs were not damaged and he's now been released from hospital.

Police officers, dog handlers and search and rescue volunteers spent the night scouring the network of steep and rugged trails that crisscross Grouse Mountain, looking for clues that could lead them to the suspect and checking to ensure there were no more victims on the paths.

Both the popular Grouse Grind and the BCMC trails were closed until noon on Wednesday, when they were finally reopened to the public by police
