Wildfire burning above Sea-to-Sky Highway now contained

A small wildfire burning above Highway 99 has been contained.

The fire broke outon a steep, rocky slope north of Sunset Beach in West Vancouver on Sunday.The B.C. Wildfire Service says calm winds and cool, wet conditions kept its size at only three hectares and it was 100 per cent contained by Monday evening.

Fire information officer Donna MacPherson said the fire is still burning in steep terrain, but crews have managed to keep the flames from spreading.

Three helicopters and 27 firefighters have been assigned to fight the flames. No homes or properties are currently threatened.

A cause has not been determined, although wildfire officials say a downed power line is suspected to be at fault.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed because firefighting equipment was on the road. Northbound traffic is being diverted into a southbound lane at Ansell Place.

Narinder Jaswalwas driving along the highway toSquamisharound 7 a.m. PT Sunday.

"[There's]lots of smoke and you can see the fire coming close down the highway," he said.

"If I got out of the car, I would be able to touch it."
