Winter driving conditions hit B.C. Southern Interior highways

Winter conditions have arrived on B.C.'s Southern Interior highways and more flurries are on the way.

Up to four centimetres of snow is expected to fall on the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt Wednesday night and more flurries are expected on Thursday, according to Environment Canada.

Snow is also forecast on the Coquihalla from Merritt to Kelowna and Kamloops.

On Thursday, Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton will see up to 10 centimetres of snow as winds gust between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour in the afternoon.

Heavy snow is alsoexpected on Highway 1 between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass, as well as on Highway 3 from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Travellers should make sure they have winter tires and check the latest conditions on DriveBC before setting off. As of October 1, B.C. law requires that all vehicles travelling on specific highways have winter tires.

The snow coincides with a powerful storm that is making its way to B.C.'s North and Central Coast Wednesday night.

In parts of the Interior, Environment Canada is warningof a cold front Thursday with strong gusts up to 80 km/h, and snow in the Kootenay and Columbia regions.
