Snowboarder dies riding in Pemberton, B.C., backcountry

A 29-year-old man from Burnaby died after falling into a tree well while snowboarding in the backcountry near Pemberton, B.C. on Sunday.

Police said the snowboarder had ridden into the area off theMillers Ridge Forest Service Road by snowmobile with a group of other men.

The 29-year-old went missing at one point during the day, and someone else in the group hiked back uphill in deep snowand found him head-first down a tree well. The Burnaby man wasn't breathing, and had turned blue.

Pemberton RCMP saidmembers of the group tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him with CPR.

Pemberton RCMP officers, search and rescue crews and members of the Pemberton Fire Department arrived in the area at 5p.m.PT as darkness was falling.

Dueto a substantialavalanche hazard, crews made the decision to wait until Monday morning to recover the man'sbody.
