B.C.'s Justice Ministry has appointed Vancouver-based lawyer Mark Jett as special prosecutor in relation to matters involving the Nanaimo City Council.

A story publishedon Fridayby CBC incorrectly stated Mayor Bill McKay was the subject of the investigation. CBC regrets the error and apologizes to McKay.

In a written statement announcing the investigation, the Criminal Justice Branch saidthe appointment is intended "to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice in light of the nature of the allegations and the status of the members of Nanaimo City Council as elected municipal officials."

The mayor and council have been at odds for months.
