Speed a factor in deadly Richmond collision, say RCMP

A three car collision early Sunday morning at No. 4 Road and Westminster Highway has claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman.

Police say in a release that around 12:30 a.m. PT a 2007 Honda Civic travelling eastbound along Westminster Highway collided with a 2014Audi R8, travelling west, in the intersection at No 4. Road.

"A third vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Venza that was stopped on No. 4 Rd, was struck by the Honda in a secondary collision," said the release.

Police say both the Honda and Audi, "sustained immense structural damage," and a 23-year-old woman in the Honda was trapped and needed to be extricated by firefighters.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police, whoadded that the victim is a resident of Coquitlam.

Meanwhile the driver and another occupant from the Honda were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and have both since been released.

The drivers of the Audi and Toyota appeared uninjured and were not transported to hospital.

Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the BC Coroners Service are now investigating the accident.

"We are in the very early stages of our investigation. We can state that speed is a definitely a factor," said Cpl. Dennis Hwang with Richmond RCMP

"We greatly appreciate those people who stopped to render aid and those that provided information to further our investigation."
