IT services privatized in Victoria

The B.C. Liberals have signed a $300-million deal, contracting out the government's information technology department.

The B.C. Liberals have signed a $300-million deal, contracting out the government's information technology department.

Management Services Minister Joyce Murray says the government has signed a contract with IBM to service its computers.

The government says the 10-year agreement will save taxpayers $80 million.

Murray says the deal with IBM will also ensure standardized technology and smoother service.

She notes that in the past, the government had a variety of computer contracts and services.

"Before my ministry was managing work stations, every ministry had its own IT department, so there was a patchwork of different kinds of computers, different software, different support arrangements, different contractors."

Murray says the 188 government employees now working in information technology have been offered jobs with IBM, and most have accepted them.
