North Van longboarder dies in collision

A woman in her early 20s has died while skateboarding on Mount Seymour Road in North Vancouver, police say.

A woman in her early 20s has died while skateboarding on Mount Seymour Road in North Vancouver, police say.

The woman was using a longboard, a skateboard more than one metre long, when she failed to complete a turn on to Anne Macdonald Way and collided with a van at about 11 a.m. PT Friday, said RCMP Cpl. Peter DeVries.

The woman was wearing a helmet, DeVries said.

She was taken to Lions Gate Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

Police didnot release the woman's name.

Longboards like this one are legal under B.C. traffic laws, but some cities and municipalities in the province ban their use on public roads. ((longboarddirectory.com))

B.C. traffic laws have no provision regardingskateboarding or longboarding on public roads, but some municipal and city bylaws in the province prohibit skateboarding on public streets, said DeVries.

Longboarding is legal on district roadways withinthe District of North Vancouver,but there are certain restrictions, such as the use of helmets.
