Vancouver City Council has giving a green light to a major new housing development next to the Marine Drive Canada Line station, one of a number ofprojects intended toincrease density along the Cambie Corridor.

The 825,000-square-foot Marine Gateway Project will include two residential towers with more than 400 units as well as a cinema, food and drug stores.

Supporters such as Joanne Pringle of the Marpole Residents Area Alliance applauded council's move to approve the rezoning application on Tuesday, saying the project will change the face of South Vancouver for the better.

"It's going to bring everything that that side of the neighborhood needs. It's going to bring a social centre,a social heart,a place to just sort of bump into your neighbour, somewhere to stroll after dinner. And then of course the obvious places to shop, eat, get the things that you need," said Pringle.

More detailed design work will be doneby the developer to determine the final look of the project.
