Recent Surrey shootings tied to ongoing gang rivalry

Police in B.C. are linking two recent fatal shootings in Surrey with an ongoing gang rivalry between the Dhak-Dhure gang and the Red Scorpions, but they are stopping short of calling it a gang war.

Manjot Dhillon, 27, was shot and killed near Cloverdale on Sunday night. Then on Tuesday, Manjinder Manny Hairan, 29, was shot dead near 127th Street and 112B Street in the Bridgeview neighbourhood of Surrey at around 2 a.m. PT.

Both men are believed to have connections to the Dhak-Dhure group, whose leader Gurmit Dhak, 32, was slain at in the Metrotown mall parking lot in October 2010.

Then 15 months later, in what some believe was retaliation,Red Scorpions founder Jonathan Bacon was killed at the DeltaHotel in Kelowna. Hells Angels member Larry Amero and a niece of another Hells Angel were also injured in that attack.

After thatpolice put out an unprecedented warningthat anyone associated with the Dhak-Duhre group could be in danger.

Within weeks, a high-ranking Dhak-Duhre member, 24-year-old Jujhar Khun-Khun, was shot on a Surrey street, but survived.

In January 2012,Sandip Duhre, 36, was gunned down in a crowded Vancouver hotel, and in May, 2012, associate Gurbinder Singh Toor was ambushed and killed outside a Port Moody recreational complex.

Then in November,Gurmit's brother Sukh Dhak and his body guardThomas Mantel were shot dead at a Burnaby hotel.

With the death of the remaining Dhak brother, only two Duhre brothers are left standing in what's alleged to be the Dhak-Duhre group Balraj Duhre, 38, and 35-year-old Paul Duhre. Balraj Duhre has escaped death twice in the past.

CombinedForces Special EnforcementUnit spokesman Const. Lindsay Houghton says police believethe most recent killings are likely the latest round of systematic retribution but they don't believe they signalthe start of another major gang war.
