Point Grey Road bike route favoured by Vancouver city hall

Staff at Vancouver city hall are recommendingbig changes that would limit traffic on Point Grey Road to bikes and neighbourhood vehicles, but the plan has yet to be approved by city councillors.

Vancouver's transportation director Jerry Dobrovolny says the 10,000 cars a day that currently use Point Grey Road will have to use alternate routes along 4th Avenue, Broadway, 12th and 16th avenues instead, if the plan is approved.

"Between Alma and MacDonald we are converting that section of Point Grey Road into a local neighborhood street for residents, local access for the destination parks that are there. We are installing traffic calming that will prevent through traffic along that entire corridor," said Dobrovolny.

The changes are part ofthelargerseaside greenwayplan to extend bike friendly routes from the Convention Centre downtown to Spanish Banks, which goes before city council next week for approval.

Other changes included in the plan are separated bike lanesat the south end of the Burrard Bridgeand improvements to the bike route on York Street.

The city held several open house to seek public input into the plan, with many local residents questioning the need to change traffic patterns in the neighbourhood.
