Surrey Six murders: Justin Haevischer charged with helping killers escape

The brother of one of the men convicted in the Surrey Six slaying will be spending Christmas in jail facing a charge for helping the convicted killers escape after the crime.

Justin Lee Haevischer made a brief appearance without a lawyer in BCSupreme Court on Wednesday morning and was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

He did not enter a pleaand told the judge he did not understand the charge, after it was read in court. He was held in custody and told by the judge to get a lawyer for his next court appearance on Jan. 7.

Haevischer was arrested Monday on a Canada wide warrant after reportedly causing a disturbance at the Edmonton International airport.

He's accused of helping his brother Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston escape, knowing the pair had just executed six men in a Surrey apartment in 2007.

Cody Haevischer and Johnston were each found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to murder earlier this year and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
