North Vancouver RCMP are seeking a suspect after a man was attacked while hiking on Grouse Mountain on Tuesday.

Police responded to a call after a 53-year-old Vancouver man was stabbed by an unknown assailant as the two men crossed paths about halfway up the B.C. Mountaineering Club Trail, which runs adjacent to the Grouse Grind trail.

The attack was unprovoked, say police, and the suspect fled the area, leaving the victim to struggle down the mountain.

At some point, the victim was met by other hikers, who alerted emergency response officials. He was stabilized at the scene and taken to Lions Gate Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

North Vancouver RCMP secured the area with assistance from the Lower Mainland Police Dog Services and are checking nearby trails for other possible victims.

Police are currently trying to produce a composite sketch of the attacker.
