VPD officer charged with dangerous driving in crash that injured pedestrian

A Vancouver police officer who hit and seriously injured a pedestrian while driving an unmarked SUV more than a year ago has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Const. Andrew Peters was officially charged with the criminal offence on Friday, according to a press release from the B.C. Prosecution Service.

Peters was on duty when his vehicle ran into the pedestrian near Knight Street and E. 20th Avenue on the night of Jan. 6, 2018. The person he struck was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but Peters was unharmed.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., which looks into incidents involving police that cause death or serious harm, was called in to investigate. The IIO wrapped up its investigation in the fall, and forwarded the file to Crown counsel to consider charges.

Peters is scheduled to make an appearance in Vancouver provincial court on Feb. 7.
