Windermere Rod & Gun club opposes deer cull, suggests relocation

Culls to manage deer populations have been controversial around the province, and in the East Kootenay, opponents have found an unlikely ally in the Lake WindermereDistrict Rod and Gun Club.

The club is petitioning the District of Invermereto move the 90 deer it plans to cull to another part of the region.

"We're experiencing a decrease in mule deer populations outside the community," president Richard Hoar told Daybreak South.

"The alternative would be to put some of those animals alive back into the regular herds that are out there."

Hoar said in addition to moving the deer, the relocated animals have to be fed for a while, until they get used to their new surroundings.

Hoar is still waiting to hear back from the District of Invermere.

"We can only go so far, we're not managers, we're just a resource base sitting in the community that's offered our expertise."
