Owners of an Abbotsford produce company are devastated, after a fire destroyed their store on the first day of the season.

Wisbey Veggies on No. 3 Rd. was completely engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived at about 10 p.m. PT last night.

"Unfortunately it will be a complete loss for the business," said assistant fire chief Craig Bird.

The tin-clad metal building was completely destroyed, said the Abbotsford Fire Department. (Kevin McDonald)

"The building is a tin clad metal siding building, so as soon as the building is compromised and starts to fall apart, all the tin covers the entire building, and it's very hard to get the hot spots out."

It was the opening day of the season for owners Bruce and Joy Wisbey.

The stand was an important part of the community, and a popular source for local food, said Christine Koch of the Fraser Valley Farm Direct Marketing Association.

"People look forward to him opening every year and hopefully he can build something in that site," she said.

The fire department is still investigating what caused the fire.
