"I don't know how long they were in the water," said RCMP Cpl. Curtis Peters. "I know that the call came in really quickly and the emergency crews responded. It's not too terribly far from the nearest fire station there."

According to EMS, the younger of the two a six-year-old boy was flown to Alberta Children's Hospital by STARS Air Ambulance in critical condition but succumbed to his injuriesshortly after.

The boy's 10-year-old brotherwas taken to hospital by ground ambulance in stable condition with concerns of hypothermia. RCMP say he remains in hospital with his family.

Peters is asking people to be cautious around waterways and ice.

"With the melting waters coming into these drainage ponds, the ice is very unstable, it's not the same as a flat and stale body of water like a lake," he said. "Please stay off of the ice."
