Airdrie RCMP arrest carjacking suspect after high-speed chase

A 25-year-old Calgary man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a truck and leading police on a high-speed chase through Rocky View County, Calgary and Airdrie on the weekend.

A 25-year-old Calgary man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a truck and leading police on a high-speed chase through Rocky View County, Calgary and Airdrie on the weekend.

According to Airdrie RCMP, two men approached the driver of a truck in the parking lot of the McDonald's on Edmonton Trail just before 3 a.m. Saturday. The suspectssprayed the driver with bear spray before taking off with his money and vehicle, police said.

One of the suspects was seenSunday evening driving a stolen vehicle, the RCMP said in a release, but he initially evaded police by driving into oncoming traffic.

A high-speed pursuit followed, with the suspect reaching speeds of 180 km/h through sections of Airdrie, Calgary and Rocky View County. Mounties from Calgary and Airdrie responded, as did the Calgary Police Service's HAWCS helicopter.

The stolen vehicle was ultimately stopped when it hit a spike belt on Highway 564 near Township Road 274. The suspect was apprehended at a nearby acreage with the help of the RCMP police dog services and the CPS canine unit.

He remains in custody pending multiple charges.
